Schubert Motorsport to field a BMW Z4 GT3 in the Blancpain Sprint Series
Following the Nürburgring 24 Hours (DE), Schubert Motorsport is extending its programme for 2014. In addition to the second half of the ADAC GT Masters season, the team from Oschersleben (DE) will also contest the remaining races of the Blancpain Sprint Series. Dominik Baumann (AT) and Austrian junior driver Thomas Jäger will be behind the wheel of the BMW Z4 GT3 that the team will be using. The duo will make their first appearance in Zandvoort (NL) on 6th July at the third race of the season. This will be followed by additional races on the Slovakia Ring (SK), in Portimao (PT), Zolder (BE) and Baku (AZ).
While Baumann is already well known in Team Schubert, Jäger is a talented newcomer. The 19-year-old has been successful in the junior formula classes so far. He has now decided to make the switch to GT sport. He took part in the Nürburgring 24 Hours (DE) in a BMW M235i Racing to help him acclimatise.
Stefan Wendl (team manager of Schubert Motorsport): “We already started working on getting involved in the Blancpain Sprint Series in the winter. However, we were initially unable to implement the project due to issues with timing and budget. We were extremely busy preparing for the 24 Hours event and the ADAC GT Masters. Now the six-month programme in this new series suits us perfectly. The same is true for Thomas Jäger, which is why we are all looking forward to the coming months. Thomas completed a test for us in the BMW Z4 GT3 last year and caught our attention. We are not aiming for the championship as we have already missed so many races. We want to fight for individual victories and develop further as a team.”
Dominik Baumann: “From the start of the year I wanted to take part in another championship alongside the ADAC GT Masters. I've always done that since the more time you spend on the track, the quicker you develop further. I'm really looking forward to the new series. The vehicle is the same, but we will have to get used to the standard Pirelli tyres. Thanks to my time in the FIA GT championship, I know most of the tracks already.”
Thomas Jäger: “Last year I realised that the only way to get to the top of formula racing is if you have a lot of money. This is why I decided to change paths. Motorsport isn't restricted to Formula 1, there are plenty of other options. All of the major manufacturers are involved in GT sport and they offer excellent opportunities to young drivers like me. I had many offers of a cockpit for this year, but I chose BMW because I grew up with this brand. I'm delighted that it has worked out with Team Schubert.”
