Schubert Motorsport are ready for the DTM challenge: New chapter begins on the Portimão rollercoaster
The engines have not yet cooled down completely at Schubert Motorsport after the successful debut of the BMW M4 GT3 in the ADAC GT Masters, but the next big challenge is already looming on the horizon. Next weekend, the team from Oschersleben will make its eagerly awaited debut in the legendary DTM. From 29 April to 1 May, the crew around the two BMW works drivers Philipp Eng and Sheldon van der Linde will get serious. The BMW M4 GT3 will make its race debut at the 2022 DTM season opener at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal.
In the run-up to the race weekend, two official test days will take place on the 4.653-kilometre circuit in Portimão. On Tuesday and Wednesday, engineers and drivers will have the opportunity to prepare extensively for the upcoming races. Three weeks ago, Schubert Motorsport competed in the DTM for the first time during the tests at the Hockenheimring. Eng and van der Linde completed around 1,000 kilometres in the team's first assessment in the prestigious GT3 series.
At the races in Portugal, the experience of the two works drivers from the BMW M Motorsport squad will be particularly important. While the DTM is new territory for the Schubert Motorsport crew, Eng and van der Linde can look back on several seasons in the championship. The Austrian and the South African have a combined tally of two victories, four pole positions and seven podium finishes and fastest race laps. In addition, they have already shared a garage as team-mates at BMW during this time, making them a perfectly attuned duo.
The drivers' experience will also play a role against the backdrop of the first appearance for the BMW M4 GT3. This year, the new GT3 machine from BMW M Motorsport replaces the BMW M6 GT3, which celebrated two victories last year. In addition to Schubert Motorsport, Walkenhorst Motorsport is the only other team to field the super sports car from the Bavarian premium manufacturer. At the season opener, 29 GT3 cars from six manufacturers will meet for the first showdown of the year.
On the race weekend, six sessions are scheduled for the entrants. Two practice sessions, each lasting 45 minutes, will be held on Friday to prepare for the two qualifying sessions and races. The battle for the starting positions and the racing action will take place on Saturday and Sunday. The qualifying sessions will start at 10:05 CET on both days. The race over a distance of 55 minutes plus one lap starts at 13:30 CET. Fans can follow the live action from this year on ProSieben on TV as well as via streaming. In Austria, ServusTV broadcasts the DTM.
Team Manager Marcel Schmidt: "April was an exciting month for us, with a very special highlight awaiting us at the end with our debut in the DTM. After the season opener in the ADAC GT Masters, our team headed straight to Portugal. That's a tight programme, but the anticipation for the DTM is really high. Our participation in this legendary racing series is a fantastic moment for all of us at Schubert Motorsport, and one that we have been working towards for a long time. Together with BMW M Motorsport, we prepared intensively for this challenge over the winter. The BMW M4 GT3 offers a package with enormous potential. With Sheldon and Philipp, we have two absolute top drivers in the cockpit who are extremely valuable to us thanks to their DTM experience. They are at home in this series and very familiar with the intensity of this tough competition. We trust in their ability as well as in the skills of our well-coordinated crew and feel ready for the first battle in the DTM."
